Insurance Producer vs. Adjuster: What Is the Difference?

Understand the basic difference between insurance producer and adjuster roles and why their licensing exams emphasize different knowledge.

An insurance producer and an insurance adjuster both work with insurance, but they perform different functions. That difference is why the examinations are not interchangeable.

Producer

A producer generally sells, solicits, or negotiates insurance under the authority allowed by the applicable license. Producer exams therefore devote substantial attention to policy forms, coverages, insurance fundamentals, licensing rules, and the duties associated with selling insurance.

Adjuster

An adjuster generally investigates, evaluates, negotiates, or settles claims under the authority allowed by the applicable license. Adjuster exams therefore emphasize claims handling, loss evaluation, policy interpretation, ethics, and state adjuster law in addition to policy knowledge.

Why the courses overlap

Both paths require a foundation in contracts, property and casualty concepts, policy forms, liability, valuation, and state regulation. A well-designed course system should reuse those fundamentals while keeping role-specific law and practice separate.

State rules matter

License names, exemptions, prelicensing requirements, exam vendors, and allowed activities differ by state. Always verify the current regulator requirements for the state where you plan to become licensed.
