What Adaptive Learning Should Actually Do

A practical explanation of adaptive learning: diagnose the gap, change the teaching approach, verify understanding, and return to the original goal.

Adaptive learning should mean more than showing easier questions after a wrong answer. A useful system needs to determine why the learner is stuck and decide what instructional response makes sense.

Start with the smallest blocking gap

If a learner misses an algebra problem because fractions are weak, repeating the algebra lecture may not solve the problem. The system should identify the missing prerequisite, repair it, and then rebuild forward.

Teach another way

Changing instruction does not require labeling someone as a fixed “visual learner” or “auditory learner.” It can mean shortening the explanation, showing a worked example, comparing two commonly confused concepts, breaking a procedure into smaller steps, or changing from an abstract explanation to a practical example.

Verify, do not merely reassure

Understanding has to be demonstrated with a new question. Correctness, answer keys, calculations, and mastery decisions should be checked by deterministic rules or reviewed course data whenever possible, rather than being left to a conversational model.

Bring weak material back later

A concept that was difficult once deserves delayed review. Spaced and mixed review help show whether the learner actually retained the concept rather than recognizing it only while the explanation was fresh.
